Alternatives 2008Alternatives 2008

The National Empowerment Center announces that Alternatives 2008, the national mental health conference organized by and for mental health consumers and survivors, will be in Buffalo, New York at the Adams Mark Hotel on October 29 through November 2, 2008.

This year’s theme is… Creating Community Through Active Citizenship

Creating or building Community is a process of finding a place of belonging, sharing our stories, making consensual decision, built upon respect for all individuals and inclusive of difference. Active Citizenship is changing one's community through involved participation to improve life for all. Now more than ever, we are called to become active partners in our communities, and the world by exercising our rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Be Your Best,
A Guided Meditation for Kids & Teens

Be Your BestThe Be Your Best guided meditation was created to bring more balance and well being into the lives of kids and teens while helping them discover what it is they truly want. Up against intense physical and emotional change and peer pressure, it can be hard for kids and teens to find their way. This meditation offers a way for them to relax, look within for answers and feel refreshed in the process.

Interrelate

InterrelateHome of the International Coalition of Mental Health Consumer/Survivor/Service User National Networks.

The primary principles of the Coalition are:

Recovery is possible for everyone. To recover, we need services and supports that treat us with dignity, respect our rights, allow us to make choices, and provide assistance with our self-defined needs. This range of services must include consumer-run and -operated programs.

Self Determination: We need to be in control of our own lives.

Holistic Choices: We need choices, including a range of recovery-oriented services and supports that provide assistance with housing, education, and career development.

Voice: We must be centrally involved in any dialogues and decisions affecting us.

Personhood: We will campaign to eliminate the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illnesses.

Legal Advocacy Workshops

Legal Advocacy Workshops

Since 1994, Legal Advocacy Workshops’ training programs have shown over a thousand lawyers how to sharpen their advocacy and writing skills. At Legal Advocacy Workshops, we teach concrete writing techniques and a confident, modern style of writing that today’s clients and judges will appreciate and understand. We insist on plain English and sharp, clean papers that focus on fact and state their position up front, yet we also encourage each lawyer to find his or her own voice. Our workshops are proven tools for developing legal talent and consistently earn rave reviews.

National Empowerment Center

National Empowerment CenterThe mission of the National Empowerment Center Inc. is to carry a message of recovery, empowerment, hope and healing to people who have been labeled with mental illness. We carry that message with authority because we are a consumer/survivor/expatient-run organization and each of us is living a personal journey of recovery and empowerment. We are convinced that recovery and empowerment are not the privilege of a few exceptional leaders, but rather are possible for each person who has been labeled with mental illness. Whether on the back ward of a state mental institution or working as an executive in a corporation, we want people who are mental health consumers/survivors/expatients to know there is a place to turn to in order to receive the information they might need in order to regain control over their lives and the resources that affect their lives. That place is the National Empowerment Center.

National Coalition of Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Organizations

Dan Fisher and Senator Kennedy

WASHINGTON, DC - April 16, 2008 - Dan Fisher with Senator Kennedy at the Campaign for Mental Health Reform's Gala Dinner in Washington DC

The National Coalition of Mental Health Consumer/Survivor Organizations (NCMHCSO) will ensure that consumer/survivors have a major voice in the development and implementation of health care, mental health, and social policies at the state and national levels, empowering people to recover and lead a full life in the community.

Mental health consumers/survivors are leading the transformation of the mental health field through our authentic voice and vision for self-directed recovery. Our vision of recovery goes far beyond treatment, because it is about all the elements that go into good lives–housing, education, jobs, social relationships, and full participation in the community. Our vision was echoed in the New Freedom Mental Health Commission Report, which sees a “future when everyone with mental illness will recover.”
