National Empowerment Center

12/19/07 - When someone is pleased with something, they will share it with at least 3 others.  If you can make it easy to spread the word about a product or article at your website, you can increase traffic considerably for very little money compared to the cost of advertising.

With that in mind I recently added three new tools to the top of the page on all 90+ articles at the National Empowerment Center.  So now one can:

  • Bookmark the page at their favorite social bookmarking website,
  • Share the article by sending the page URL to a friend, or
  • Easily print the page by clicking a button.

2006 - New online store for the National Empowerment Center (NEC)

  • Replaced an outdated Yahoo! store
  • Customized to match the NEC website
  • Set up payment processing via Card Service International
  • Simplified order processing for NEC staff
  • Using Miva Merchant version 5 [More on Miva Merchant 5]

11/2005 - New NEC website launched

In rebuilding the site, my goals were:

  • Compliance with Section 508
  • Able to meet the standards set by the W3C for HTML
  • Able to meet the standards set by the W3C for CSS
  • Following accepted standards of site layout and design to make the pages
    • Load quickly
    • Look similar in various browsers
  • I created a special "articles" template (there are over 80 articles) and a style sheet which includes:
    • No side navigation menu, so there is more space for text and graphics
    • Minimum navigation at the top
    • A special print style sheet - when you print the page, you will see no navigation, or colored border areas
  • All photos and graphic elements in the site include a short text description
  • Complicated graphics include a link to a separate web page for a long description.  This is good for people who use a screen reader, (visually impaired).
